The Arthur Roy Johnson (ARJ) Community Outreach was established to be a safe space for families, who cannot handle the everyday cost of living and are dealing with toxic stress due to losing a loved one or experiencing a life changing event. Bringing a transformation to families in South St. Louis City and the surrounding metropolitan area is our focus. Our purpose is to provide services to the families who are either in toxic environments or have experienced life changing events that will hinder them from being vital assets in their communities. In addition, we have eliminated the cost of the services being provided so that all can participate. Services will include: (1) Project G.E.A.R. (2) Back to School (3) Thanksgiving Food Drive (4) Christmas Charitable Campaign (5) Project Miracles (6) Community In Action (7) Rose Closet (8) Safe Sleep (9) Life Skills, Respect and much more.
We are not only concerned with the outer being, but with how well families internalize their everyday struggles and problems that they face within their communities. Our primary goal is to create a learning excel center where families can flourish and grow. One of our primary focuses is on early literacy. The children we are targeting, will be the future parents in 2033. If we can help them read on the appropriate grade level, this will enable them to have better choices as adults, go to college, and get better paying jobs; this will also provide them with access to quality health care, healthier lives, and enable them to reproduce healthy babies past their first birthday. Statistics show that a student who fails to read on a 3rd grade level, will either drop out of school or spend time in the penitentiary. Reading is a huge part of comprehension. In general, people who live in low impoverished areas are often times illiterate, undereducated, and lack vital comprehension skills. Our endeavour is to create a fun learning environment where children and families can soar through exciting hands on activities such as one on one tutoring, gardening, and growing fresh fruits and vegetables. We will also introduce children to recycling and emphasizing the importance of a clean and safe community. This will enhance the youth’s personal talents and skills that each one of them possess and in turn, help them be productive leaders in their households and community. This is just a few of the programs that we are offering and will continue to build.
The heart of our community is our children. They have the stamina, strength, courage and power to bring a positive change to their communities. If they do not have support , love, direction or guidance, they have the ability to destroy, damage, and bring the value of their community down. This in turn will make people feel unsafe and dwellings uninhabitable. By incorporating these techniques and partnerships with other organizations, agencies, and professional people that live in St. Louis, we can change the image of how youth are portrayed by giving them a sense of pride and ownership for where they live or in their community. This will get our youth off the streets, and give them a future to live for and a purposeful meaning to life.
